Welcome to the Department of Physiotherapy, which is currently domiciled in the College of Basic Medical Sciences, Chrisland University Abeokuta. Chrisland University has it in record to be the first University in Nigeria to start Doctor of Physiotherapy programme and the first University to secure National University Commission (NUC) Full Accreditation and Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) of Nigeria Full Accreditation for DPT programme in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa at large. We are proud to be the pioneer championing this programme in Nigeria.
The Doctor of Physiotherapy
In 2017, the Physiotherapy programme was approved by the University Senate and the first intake of students into the Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) programme started in October, 2019. Since its inception, the department has enjoyed good patronage in terms of student-enrolment. Students take lectures in the assigned lecture halls on campus. The first set of students of the department is currently in 400 level.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Doctor of. Physiotherapy programme is based on the following set of beliefs:
(i) Physiotherapists are instrumental in restoring individual function and meeting the changing health needs of society, including public education, prevention and health promotion.
(ii) The Doctor of Physiotherapy degree programme provides the foundation for life-long personal and professional growth through active pursuit of knowledge.
(iii) Teaching and learning involve a collaborative and dynamic process between lecturers/clinical supervisors and students which requires commitment, creativity, and continuous assessment.
(iv) Effective learning occurs inside and outside of the classroom in the context of professional, community, and service-oriented activities.
(v) Physiotherapy services are driven by current best evidence
Objectives
i. To produce physiotherapy graduates of noble character and ethically sound judgment.
ii. To produce graduates with in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of physiotherapy.
iii. To produce physiotherapy graduates with clinical skills necessary to function effectively in various settings (Hospitals, Rehabilitation Facilities, other Health Establishments, Sports and Fitness Facilities, Industrial workplace and other occupational environments.
iv. To produce Physiotherapy graduates that shall be job and wealth creators equipped for self-employment in Hospitals, Rehabilitation Facilities, other Health Establishments, Sports and Fitness Facilities, Industrial workplace and other occupational environments.
Mission Statement
To produce well-educated, highly knowledgeable, highly skilled and culturally competent and ethically sound physiotherapists who are worthy in character and sound in judgment to function effectively as clinicians, educators, and administrators in improving the quality of life for all individuals. To produce highly motivated physiotherapists who would seize every available opportunity for professional development (if possible) through postgraduate specialist and/or academic training.
Vision
The vision of the Department is to become a world-class training and research centre in the training of physiotherapy professionals.
It is good to note that DPT programme at Chrisland University has secured FULL ACCREDITATION from National University Commission (NUC), the first of its kind in Nigeria. Chrisland University successfully hosted the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) of Nigeria for her Accreditation Exercise in May 2023 and hopefully waiting for a favourable outcome. The Department of Physiotherapy, Chrisland University is well equipped with ultra-modern equipment that is to be beat/ equal to none in Physiotherapy training institutions in Nigeria with competent lecturers to teach these students.
