Our Sports Directorate plays a vital role in ensuring that students are provided with opportunities to engage in physical activities, promote wellness, and nurture their talents in various sports disciplines.
The Sports Directorate is committed to developing the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students by promoting participation in sports and physical fitness. We aim to create a healthy and vibrant campus environment where students can cultivate their athletic skills, foster teamwork, and build leadership qualities. Through sports, we strive to instil values such as discipline, resilience, and excellence, which are essential for both personal and professional growth.
Overview of Objectives
- The sports directorate is assigned the responsibility of coordinating sporting activities in the university for both staff and students.
- It is tasked with the duty of organising activities, indoor events (Table Tennis, Volleyball and Basketball), board events (including intellectual games like chess, ludo and scrabble) and outdoor events, that is track (Athletics) and field (football).
- The directorate is expected to organise major sports festival annually, and coordinate students to participate in the events.
- It is tasked with the duty of organising invitational games or competitions and coordinating contingents to put up good participation in such events.
- It is tasked with the responsibility of advising the management on issues relating to sports.
- It makes requisitions and supervises the procurement of sports facilities.
- The sports director and (or) coordinator is expected to represent the university at the quarterly council meeting of the National Private University Games (NPUGA).
Major Programmes of the Sports Council
The sports committee organises three major programmes and festivals annually,
- The Annual Scrabble Competition, with cash prize of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000). Sponsors are sought every year.
- Annual VC’s Chess Masters, sponsored by the Sports Director, with a Cash Prize of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000).
- Annual Sports Week (Fiester), which features all events, Table Tennis, Staff Community Aerobics and walkout, athletics, basketball and football. The main event of the Sports’ Week is the invitational tournament that features selected private universities in Lagos and Abeokuta. Previous events have been attended by Crescent University, Crawford University, Bells Technical University, Christopher University and McPherson University.
Students’ Involvement
The students are allowed to choose their leader, that is, the Students’ Sport Representative in a general election. The representative heads the students’ arm of the Sports Council, which is made up of elected or appointed captains of all active sports.
Students are given ample opportunity to participate in whatever sport they have interest in or passion for. At the point of interview and orientation, the students are introduced to various sports. They are subsequently invited to training, where they are incorporated into the teams. At the beginning of the semester, sports competitions are organised by the Sports Council to recruit new sports contingents.
Activities
- The sports contingents engage in regular training.
- The Gym runs every day of the week, with registered participants ranging from 18 to 25 contingents every semester.
- The students, on a few occasions, are taken out for training in standard athletics and football track and field respectively.
- Training sessions are held twice or three times every week for both football and basketball games.
- The students regularly organise hostel football, basketball and board competitions.
Achievements and Events
The directorate has had the following events.
- The Football, Basketball and athletics teams had novelty – friendly matches with Peter Akinola Foundation in February 2021, McPherson University in 2022 and 2023, and Christopher University in 2023.
- The first Chrisland board competition, which featured Scrabble, Chess and Table Tennis, was organised in March 2021. It was sponsored by Dr Omogbadegun,
- The Annual Sports’ Week, which featured staff and students’ aerobics, Badminton, five-aside football, chess, and scrabble and invitational tournament was pioneered in May 2021 and was held at the main bowl of MKO Abiola Stadium. The biggest event in the sports week was the Invitational Tournaments. Since the inauguration, there have been four editions, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2034. The sports council has invited institutions like McPherson University, Ajebo, Crescent University, Abeokuta and Bells Technical University, Ota, Crawford University and Christopher University to participate in the competition at the main bowl of the MKO Abiola Stadium. The events featured games like athletics, basketball and football contest among the four institutions.
- The sports council has raised excellent sports contingents over the years. Two of these students were particularly outstanding, Walid and Tominsin Oviebo, who excelled in athletics, winning gold in the men’s 100m and 200m races, and 100m and 4X100m girls’ respectively in the 2021 and 2022 sports festival respectively.
- The maiden edition of VC’s Chess competition was held in July, 2022. The event since inception has been sponsored exclusively by Dr. Olawunmi, the Sports director, with prize money of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000).
External Membership
The sport directorate is a registered member of the National Private Universities Games Association (NPUGA). The meeting of this council is held quarterly and rotated around member-institutions. Between 2021 and January 2023, the university management has sponsored the Sports Coordinator to be represented in NPUGA meetings across South-west, South-south and South-east Nigeria, namely, Achiever’s University, Owo, Ondo State, January 24th to 27th, 2023; Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, November 9th to 12th, 2022; Igbinedion University, Okada, Benin City, August 19th to 21st, 2021; Benson Idahosa University; Elizade University, Ilara Moki, November 17th to 19th, 2021.
The University pays its membership due to this organisation.

- Five-aside football pitch
- Basketball Court
- Chess boards
- Badminton Court
- Volleyball Court, with moveable rims.
- Table-Tennis boards
- Scrabble boards.
