Biochemistry Department Takes The Lead In The 2nd Spelling Bee Competition As MLS, Nursing Departments Trail Behind


Exactly one week after the maiden edition of Chrisland University Spelling Bee Competition debuted on campus, the Department of Biochemistry has emerged first place winner in the 2nd edition of the competition which attracted a mammoth crowd of students. 


It was a narrow win for the Biochemistry Department which clinched the ultimate victory with a total of 38 points.


Coming second at the contest which held today at the University Auditorium was the Department of Medical Laboratory Science which scored 37 points as against the 3rd place winner, Nursing Science Department with 34 points.


Earlier last Wednesday, English Department had proved undisputed mastery of the language over other departments in the College of Arts, Management and Social Sciences (CAMASS), scoring 36 marks.


The 2nd position last week had earlier been clinched by the Department of Accounting, and Banking and Finance, with 23 marks, beating Mass Communication Department.


However, in today's competition, six other Departments, among them, Computer Science with 27 marks, Physiotherapy 27 marks, Chemistry 24 marks, Biotechnology 19 marks, Public Health 18 marks and Microbiology with 10 marks, all trailed behind in that order.


Just like it was during the maiden edition last Wednesday, a cash prize of N25,000 was presented to the ultimate winner, Biochemistry Department while Medical Laboratory Science Department took home N15,000 and N10,000 was won by Nursing Department.


Present at the occasion were the Registrar, Mr Samuel Omotoso who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chinedum Peace Babalola, FAS, Dean of College of Natural and Applied Science, Prof Emmanuel Maduagwu and Dr. Adeyemi who also stood in for the Dean, College of Medical Basic Science, Prof Oladapo Walker.


Ag. Head, Department of English, Dr. Ayo Osisanwo and Dr. Gabriel Okonkwo coordinated the competition which was part of the SMART Goals of CAMASS.
