Professor Augustine Onyeaghala is a Professor of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and an accomplished scholar, researcher, and academic leader. He has extensive experience in Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Research, Public Health, Phytomedicine, and Medical Laboratory Systems Strengthening. He has devoted his career to advancing medical laboratory science education, research, healthcare quality, and evidence-based practice in Nigeria and beyond.
Professor Onyeaghala obtained his academic and professional training in Medical Laboratory Science and has built an outstanding record of teaching, research, mentorship, and community service. Over the years, he has contributed significantly to the development of medical laboratory science through innovative research, capacity building, quality assurance initiatives, and health systems strengthening programs.
His research interests span clinical chemistry, laboratory medicine, phytomedicine, diagnostic evaluation, translational research, public health, and healthcare quality management systems. He has led and collaborated on numerous research projects addressing critical healthcare challenges, including laboratory quality improvement, diagnostic accuracy, infectious disease surveillance, traditional and herbal medicine research, and healthcare service integration. His research findings have been widely disseminated through publications in reputable national and international journals, conference presentations, and policy engagements.
A strong advocate for quality laboratory services, Professor Onyeaghala has played a pivotal role in promoting the implementation of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in medical laboratories and strengthening diagnostic services in Nigeria. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he contributed to the evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic kits and generated evidence that informed quality assurance and diagnostic decision-making. He also led the development of Nigeria's pioneering framework for laboratory service integration, designed to enhance coordination, efficiency, and quality across laboratory networks.
Beyond research, Professor Onyeaghala is deeply committed to mentorship and human capacity development. He has supervised and mentored numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, many of whom now occupy important positions in academia, healthcare, and research institutions. His dedication to academic excellence and professional development continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals.
Professor Onyeaghala actively participates in national and international professional and scientific engagements, contributing to policy discussions, healthcare innovations, and research collaborations aimed at improving health outcomes.
