The Department of Public Health is one of the foundation Departments of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences of Chrisland University, Abeokuta.

Vision Statement:

The vision of the Department is to become a world-class training and research centre in the training of Public Health Practitioners. 

Mission Statement.

To produce well educated, highly knowledgeable, culturally competent and highly skilled ethically sound Public Health Practitioners who are worthy in character and sound in judgment to function effectively as educators and administrators in improving the quality of health and life for all individuals.

To produce highly motivated Public Health Professionals who would seize every available opportunity for professional development (if possible) through postgraduate specialist and/or academic training.

Philosophy

To produce highly competent Public Health Practitioners that are able to function professionally and in the fear of God and love for humanity thus prevent locally present common health conditions occurring and spreading and yet capable of functioning internationally by keeping abreast with cutting edge preventive health care delivery practices through learning and professional development.  To foster mutual respect and camaraderie among the various members of the health care professionals for the ultimate benefit of the clients and society at large.  The programme of study is designed not only to meet the intellectual demands and techniques in the field of Preventive health and its sub-specialties together with a broad knowledge of basic knowledge to enable them make meaningful contributions to our people in moving away from poverty, ignorance and ill-health.

Objectives

The goal of the Department of Public Health is not just “Radiating Excellence” as in the motto of Chrisland University but “Radiate Academic and Professional Excellence. As in the words of the World Health Organization in defining as ‘not just the absence of disease, our Department would incorporate the integration of a conducive environment for healthy development, promotion of healthy lifestyle habits, training of professionals who can ‘think on their feet’ to meet emerging challenges and sustain existing health facilities resources in the face of dwindling allocation to health care delivery especially the preventive components.  The hands-on community-based Holistic approach would be our modus operandi. 

Specific Objectives:

By the end of the academic programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in public Health, the graduate will be able to;

(1) Function adequately with other members of the health team at local, state, national and international settings to increase the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary for individuals to assume greater responsibility for their health status.

(2) Perform full community diagnosis using the indicators of health and participate actively in community mobilization processes.

(3) Produce Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials and implement client health education and information strategies in health facilities/clinics/hospitals and community settings.

(4) Participate in immunization exercises and perform nutrition assessment of infants, children of school age, adolescents and adults in the community using anthropometric measurements.

(5) Monitor the environment for pollutants and ensure safety at work sites, identifying the main occupational hazard in the work place and in the community and initiate appropriate actions.

(6) Plan and implement school health programmes for substances abuse reduction, sexuality including HIV/AIDS programme and nutrition education

(7) Plan and develop survey strategies/methods for communicable diseases control and disease surveillance.

Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission into the generic Public Health programme must satisfy the minimum University requirements for admission to the degree programme which includes at least six (6) credit-level passes at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) examination or its equivalent in five subjects, at not more than two sittings which must include English Language, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and any other subject. Candidates with Advanced Level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Registered Nurses, Community Health Officers, Environmental Health Officers or candidates with NCE (Physical/Health Education, Home Economics, Science Education, Nutrition) having at least merit pass level or OND in Biological Sciences may be admitted by direct entry into 200Level, provided they satisfy other University admission requirements.  Transfer candidates from other Universities would need approval from the University Registrar for such application to be effected.
